Internet Fraud TIPS

How do I protect my credit card on the phone or internet?

  • Sign up Verified by Visa--password protected transactions online
  • If someone calls you claiming to be a bank representative and asks for your PIN number, don't give it to them. Report it to your bank and the police.
  • When using a telephone credit card in a public place, shield the keypad with your hand or body.
  • Do not give the CVV/CVC code on the back of the card to anyone;   Including someone claiming they are from the credit card company
  • Do not give your account number over the phone unless you initiated the call.

Opt out of credit card solicitations. Reduce the volume of pre-approved credit card offers (which can be swiped and used by thieves) by calling 1-888-5OPT OUT, which will take your name off marketing lists sold by the credit bureaus. You'll need to input your Social Security number as an identifier. Signing up for this service didn't eliminate but did significantly reduce the number of offers coming into our home.

What steps can I take to prevent fraud on my checking account?

  1. When ordering checks, use only initials and last name.  If the checkbook is lost/stolen, no one except the bank will know how checks are signed, whether initials or first name.
  2. When writing checks to pay credit card accounts, put only the last 4 numbers of the card on the "Memo" line.
  3. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone or better yet leave the number off.  Use a PO Box, if applicable, instead of home address.  Never have a SS# printed on your checks.
  4. Copy and store both sides of license, credit cards, etc. to have access to accounts and phone numbers to notify the appropriate agencies in the event of loss/theft.
  5. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where documents were lost/stolen.
  6. Call the three national credit-reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on account name and Social Security number.  The numbers are:
